History in Austria

The extensive breed was among the first beef breeds imported to Austria in the early 80ies. Their sturdy characteristics made them quite popular. In the 90ies and early 2000s they were the biggest beef breed according to the number of herdbook cows. In the last years the number of herdbook cattle decreased but they are still popular for extensive cattle husbandry.

Highland Cattle from Austria have been exported to various other countries, e.g. Germany, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Italy and Hungary.
