Limousin was among the first beef breed imports to Austria back in the 70ies. They came from Luxembourg, France and Germany. Limousin bulls are frequently used in crossbreeding. For the label “Styria Beef” it had been mandatory to use Limousin bulls as herd sires. Therefore the majority of pedigree herds is still located in this federal state, but Limousin is bred all over Austria. Annually about 180 bulls are scored. The induction of the polled gene into the population is an important goal and semen from polled bulls is commonly used.
