History in Austria:
The Japanese bred Wagyu cattle are known worldwide for their meat quality. The first Wagyu in Austria were born in the early 2000s. The number of cattle increased and in 2016 the breeding program for Wagyu cattle started.
The main section of the herdbook is divided into three classes (A, B and S), with A being the class for “fullblood” Wagys. To be registered in the fullblood class the animal must be tested for known hereditary diseases and its pedigree has to be traced back to either US or Australian fullblood Wagyu and the pedigree has to be confirmed via DNA-testing.
